There are many things that contribute to making a game great, and visuals are an important facet of that.It could even be argued that they are the most important element in a game.
Arguing that matter isn't the point of this blog.
Instead, this blog will focus on the related matter of aesthetic design in video games, both the good and the bad, in terms of how well they pull off the principals of design in bringing their whole visual package together.
Games will be brought in, observed, and deconstructed into their base design elements with the aid of various sources, both professional and academic, about the making of video games and general visual design. Then the elements will be put back together to see how well each of them meshes and supports one another and the overall objective of the game.
This blog will constist of:
- Eight total blog posts, each covering an element of design used in good (and bad) looking games.
- Excerpts from pertinent authorial sources on the design matter.
- In-depth analysis and synthesis from articles and reviews pertaining to the game in question.
- A podcast about aesthetics.
- An interview with someone from the visual design field.
- Screenshots, drawings, diagrams, and other visual aids in every post.
Knowing how designs work is the first step in unlocking the meaning in game media.
